Hi
My Betta has developed an ulcer type thingy on his dorsal fin. Anyone have any experience with this
type of thing?
I change his water every two weeks (full tank change), but will now do it every week. I have been putting in
a multi cure that helps with fin rot. I had his water checked at the fish store and they said all was well. So,
the only thing I can think of is that his poop is polluting his water. I feed him blood worms (not the
dehydrated ones) and he poo's a lot.

Re: Ulcer on his dorsal
Mon, July 2, 2007 - 9:35 AMFirst thing, when you take the water to the pet store for testing... always ask them for specific #s and never accept, "Oh it's fine". It's sad, but very true... they either don't know or don't care what any amount of ammonia or nitrites can do to a fish... and nitrates can do damage in excess, as well. Get the #s.
Depending on what size tank or bowl your fish is in, 100% water change every 2 weeks is not nearly enough. If he's in a 1g bowl, every 3 days is healthy... a 2-3g, once a week is okay... a cycled 3g or larger can go with partial water changes once a week (usually 25%).
If he's pooping a LOT, you may be overfeeding him. Bloodworms are a great diet for Bettas... I'm so glad you're feeding him these... but he only needs 3-4 on a daily ,or every other day, basis. I know, I know.. he looks hungry and he begs sooooo good LOL but he really can go a day in between meals or have very little every day, with one day of fasting.
Teh meds may work for him, but the biggest issue inhibiting his healing now is the water quality.
Good Luck! -

Re: Ulcer on his dorsal
Mon, July 2, 2007 - 10:37 PMHi-thanks for the reply! He is in a 2-3 gallon tank. A lot of room. I am totally
over feeding him!! I give him 3 worms in the am and 3 in the pm. It's hard to resist
him though. He swims from one end of the tank to the other trying to follow me,
(or at least that's my interpretation!). He loves his worms. Maybe I'll taper him
down to 2 in the am and 2 in the pm.
The water change will take place every week.
Thanks again!
