no, not YOU but your bettas... are you breeding your bettas? i have a new boy, Zulie; and i just found a match for him, Huda... at least she's a 'pheno' match... umm, she 'looks' like him. i don't know what she's got gene wise.
anyhoo, i'm going to start conditioning them for a spawn attempt, and was just wondering if anyone else is breeding their babies

Re: anybody breeding here?
Sat, December 24, 2005 - 4:51 PMI'm not currently breeding, but have done it several times before. Each time I have ended up with babies but have had strange things happen sometimes. -

Re: anybody breeding here?
Sun, December 25, 2005 - 7:07 AMwhat kinds of strange things??? i've never done this, but have read EVERYTHING 2-3x at least :p
and am active in a breeder forum, with lots of support
just thought i would throw it out in here... please share the 'strange things' ... i'd love to hear
peace and health,
a
little update: Zulie is being the 'very interested guy' and Huda is like, "yeah, i see you but ooooh! look at me!!" (her reflection in the big, pretty marbles) ... typical 'hard to get' action :p -

Re: anybody breeding here?
Sun, December 25, 2005 - 12:08 PMThis one time I bred some bettas...by the time they got to fry stage, my tank was infested with WORMS!! I never found out how they got in there, but it was gross. Little white ones everywhere, squirming about ever so nastily. My male and female lived (well, the female I took out beforehand). I put some parasite stuff in the tank and it killed the worms, but it killed the fry too.
I have had the male kill the female, the female kill the male and then both of them kill each other, not in that order.
I tried to breed a betta that I thought was some sort of slow one...he stared at the female for a week and didn't even chase her, nip her or anything. Then a week later he mated with her dozens of times...I had bunches of different fry that were very different ages...some of them were huge and swimming around, and some were still eggs floating on the top. lol -

Re: anybody breeding here?
Sun, December 25, 2005 - 1:43 PMoh wow!! okay, well you've seen the 'gammit' of all that can happen... and worms??? i have to ask some folks about the worm thing... that sounds freakish. wonder how in the heck worms got in there?
anyhoo, Huda has tried 2x to jump in with nearby Zulie... so she is topped off and i will card later on. i was waiting for her to bar up, not knowing that pastels, cellos, whites in general DO NOT bar when 'in the mood'. duhh. so, they both need a few more conditioning days before they get to 'whoopie'
... the card goes up now
thanks for sharing your stories :o) -

Re: anybody breeding here?
Sun, October 1, 2006 - 10:59 PMI always love show betta. Wow...600 of them. For sure you are busy with feeding them all the time.
But then i am into wild betta now. Currently keeping the betta macrostoma, betta ocellata, betta cocina, betta falx, betta chanoides, betta livida and betta imbellis. -

Re: anybody breeding here?
Mon, October 2, 2006 - 11:15 AMHey dom, is it any more difficult to keep the wild type bettas thriving and healthy? I have always wanted to get a pair or two of imbellis and some macs, cocinas and falx... I'm just afraid they will be more difficult to maintain.
I am only breeding regular and giant Plakad now, and want to go a little ways on the "wild side" ...hehehe -

Re: anybody breeding here?
Tue, October 3, 2006 - 1:29 AMPH is the main issue need to take extra care of when keeping or breeding the wild betta. Just like most of the wild betta able to breed in the highest PH of 5 only. Some of them able to survive or breed at PH 4. Betta ocellata able to survive in PH 7-7.5. Breeding is easier. Providing bigger tank and hiding space. 1 pair per tank.
Imbellis is everywhere at i am staying. The drain at the road side or some small streams. Most of the lfs selling like USD0.30-0.50 each. Ocellata and Macrostoma able to get from Borneo only. Price is sky high as you can check on the aquabid.com. Remember a nice pair of adult macrostoma up to USD900.
I bred plakat when i was a school boy. Since they are tough and easy to breed. Macrostoma pair can't be disturbed when they are mating or holding the eggs. Else, the male will swallow the eggs. Which is the same with Ocellata. But the eggs of Ocellata are holding by female. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: anybody breeding here?
Thu, October 5, 2006 - 5:59 PMI'm so jealous... you can just take a trip outside and pick up some Imbellis? Wow!
I would love to visit Borneo... I am attempting to breed some loaches that come from that region. I have P. cheni loaches (Hillstreams or Borneo Sucker or Chinese Butterfly... all common names given to them and similar ones) in a cold river tank set up. They are very healthy and have showed some breeding behavior, but no babies that I can see.... yet!
My giant Plakads have been in a breeder tank since yesterday. The female isn't too beat up, so I may get some nice babies from this pair. They are blue lace and black orchid... male is nearly 5 inches.
Thanks for the info, again :o) -

Re: anybody breeding here?
Thu, October 5, 2006 - 7:11 PMYes. Beside the imbellis. Betta pugnax is very common here to. Most of the wild caught pugnax are 4-5inch long. Kind of huge. Imbellis max is 2.5inch which i am having.
If you are not scare of leeches, bugs, worms, python, wild boar...then you can make a trip to Borneo. -
-
Re: anybody breeding here?
Fri, October 6, 2006 - 11:31 PMLOL ...leeches freak me out a little, but the other stuff come as second nature... maybe not the wild boar, but the snakes and bugs and pythons do
Wow! I didn't realize pugnax get that big. I have to look into the wilds some more. All of my bettas are getting up there in age... youngest are about 6 months old and the rest are one and two years old... so maybe I will go all wild once everyone has passed on.
I'm still waiting to see what my giants are going to do. She took some damage and she's really barred up now, but I haven't seen a "dance" yet. Usually my bettas won't breed unless it storms here... heavy rain, etc. I'm not sure how to simulate atmospheric pressure changes, so I have to rely on nature. We shall see...

Re: anybody breeding here?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 11:48 AMwe have Lady Chang, Nobusan, Big blue, and Retta betta, and nobody's ready to breed yet, we even put the male and the female together and they were all just hangin' out, Retta lives with the gold fish Coppo now cause she pouted and wouldn't eat with the Big blue.
