Attack Mode

I put up a mirror on one side of the bowl.

Is it ok for my betta to always be on red alert and flexing his skills.

<his name is Big Red cause he's small but very red - pics later

IMHO it stresses the fish out thinking he has a rival that won't leave. I only show mine a mirror on the occasions I want to check his fins or show him off to someone. But that's me. My first Betta lived several years in a 2 gallon and my current Betta lives with White Clouds in a 12 gallon and is going on 3 (?)yrs old now.

Betta are pretty smart fish. If you have the mirror in a fixed position, they'll generally learn to ignore it after a couple of days or so. But it depends on the individual fish's temperament. Some betta are psychotic and will flame on at just about anything that moves, all the time (which is probably not very healthy). Others are very docile and never flare. Most are somewhere in between.

I keep Nobunaga, my red/blue crowntail betta in a tank with a mirrored background, along with some red-eye tetra and corys and chinese algae eaters and he's cool as a cucumber. In fact he interacts well with the other fish, I've never had a single incident with him. Occasionally he'll flare up when the algae eaters go chasing each other around the tank at ramming speed (which they love to do), but he's never attacked them. A lot really depends on how aggressive your specific fish is.

Bottom line, it's normal for betta to show off once in awhile, but if they are doing it constantly and on a daily basis you should probably remove the offending item.

I just got a male betta a week ago, and he won't eat anything. But his tank is kind of mirrored in corners so he is always on attack mode, so today i got a female and she ate fine and everything,( a worker at a pet store said you could put a female and a male together) but when i went to put them together the male's cheeks got really puffy and seemed like was going to attck her. So in result, i have 2 fish in 2 seperate tanks... any suggestions? Can you put females togther, or any fish w/ a female ... bc the male is way too aggressive and he won't eat or anything??? :(
