The eggs that Flanders has been so carefully looking after for the last few days have finally started hatching!! The babies can't swim yet, so when they fall out of the nest they just sink. But Flanders picks them up and puts them back. I'm so excited!

Re: BABIES!!!
Mon, December 4, 2006 - 8:21 PMOh! I love this part... daddy tends to the babies so tirelessly, doesn't he? Be sure to feed him some good stuff now, so he can keep his strength up to retrieve the little ones and not accidently snack on any.
You'll want to watch him for exhaustion, as well.
Congratulations!! :o)

Re: BABIES!!!
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 4:57 PMWhen you have babies, you should be preparing a jar with lettuce or something in it beforehand so it starts to "rot" in the jar and makes plankton. The babies love to eat this, and they can't eat big food like Daddy can. Next time, try this. -

Re: BABIES!!!
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 6:38 PMRachel, if you decide to try again... let me know. Maybe I can help you prepare better for the babies and parents.
Holly, putting lettuce in a jar MIGHT result in some INFUSORIA (not plankton), but there are healthier ways to feed Betta fry. And they don't usually need any additional foods until they are free swimming on their own. They feed off their "yolk sac" for a few days after hatching.
Preparing the tank properly for the spawning parents is usually also preparing the tank for the upcoming fry... live plants for Mom to hide in will also have "infusoria" for babies to feed off of, especially live Java Moss.
