Hi, I’ve been thinking about getting a beta again soon. Like having them around :) But. I’ve moved out form my parents, and my old tank wouldn’t fit in my new place. How small do you guys think the tank can be before he’ll get uncomfortable? I heard that they actually prefer small and dark tanks. is that true?

Re: Tank size
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 10:33 AMNo, they don't prefer small and dark tanks... that is a myth. :(
My boys love the roaming space of 3g up to 10g, and some even prefer a 20g all to themselves or with non-intrusive tank mates like Otocinclus or Mystery snails. It really just depends on the individual Betta kid.
Try a 2.5 or 3g. You can regulate the temp in these pretty easily, and it is still small enough to do 100% water changes once or twice a week.
If you don't want to do water changes like that, then get a 5g or a 10g... even better... and you can cycle it with only 25% water changes once a week required.
Hope this helps! -

Thu, December 14, 2006 - 10:47 AMOh good... you figured it out quick. I was thinking along the lines of 10L or so. I used to have a 3g set up on my pc desk... it wasn't bad at all... and my fish was very happy in it. :o) -

Thu, December 14, 2006 - 10:55 AMi found an internet converter - didn’t even have to think for myself! :) Do you think I could have one male and one female in there? -

Re: Tank size
Fri, December 15, 2006 - 9:52 AMI wouldn't put a male and a female together unless you want them to breed... resulting in 100s of little fry, shortening your male's life and possibly killing your female (they spawn real UGLY!!)... or you want one or both to be killed. The girls are just as nasty as the boys, and having them in such close proximity is just asking for a death.
Also, the 100s of little fry that result need to be separated out after 4-6 weeks... the males... cuz they fight at this age, too.
You can keep mulitple females in a larger tank together... somewhat successfully... with lots of work and attention to their behavior. The tank needs to be at least 10g for maximum of three... only 3 at this size tank... with LOTS of hides and plants to break up the line of sight for them. Two won't work in any set up cuz one will torment the other to death... three gives someone else a turn at torment while the other takes a break. These fish are really this NASTY in attitude! They really are.
I know tank size is an issue now, but in the future when you may have more room/space... a large tank full of females is beautiful and very entertaining. I have a 30g near my bedside with about 10 females in it... I raised all of them... and they fight and chase and go at it all day and all night! It's endless. The whole tank is heavily planted and there are at least 10 hides in there... at least! They get tired of fighting with one another and go after the snails or the rocks or a plant... sometimes the heater! They're crazy! LOL
Have fun with your little guy! Post pics when you can...

Re: Tank size
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 10:29 AMThis isn't about how small - but just tank size in general. I have mine all by his lonesome in a well decorated 5 gallon tank - and he is SO happy:-) Very active, swims all over, under, around all day. I think it's also very decorative - the betta himself is pretty, but then since it's only one fish, I can have more stuff in there to make it interesting without crowding other fish....
